St Elmo’s Convent

The buildings of the Catholic Convent were constructed in stages between 1918 and 1939 and were used as a retreat for the nuns of the Third Order of St Dominic, as well as a remedial school for children with learning disabilities.

It was forced to close  in 1994 due to reduced government subsidies.

I visited the Convent in 2011 and made these photographs. At the time there were a handful of people living there but the main church was no longer in use, and many of the buildings had lost their roofs and were overgrown by plants and, in some cases, trees.
